Resolves #11

Note that additional changes will be needed in daqconf to get the functionality desired (i.e. filling in the Datatype field).

Do we need to change the Target Version for this PR to v3.0.0? I see that it has been merged to develop, and that seems to imply that it will be part of v3.0.0...

@bieryAtFnal I've updated the target version field. No behavior changes as a result of this PR (it just exposes more API).
