Have you considered reworking something from Game-Icons.net? That's where I got most of mine from. I was fairly lazy with the art, but you can do a lot more from there if you put more time into it, it's pretty good for logos.

DaloLorn commented 8 years ago

I'd rather have something on par with Firgof's old logo. (The one that vehemently insists that we're in version 0.120, and uses an outdated Remnant model. :P)

So far, neither one of us has managed to accomplish that.

darloth commented 8 years ago

I can try and make something like that, if you get me a few nice glamor-shots of the appropriate ships ingame, with nice lighting.

Saying that... which logo was Firgof's exactly? The one with big construction stripes at top and bottom, and a ship in the middle?

DaloLorn commented 8 years ago

Yep. Hmmm...

darloth commented 8 years ago

How about something like this?

XCF also attached: FancyShip.zip

I'm still not sure the lineburst nova in the star template is a good idea, but it looked a bit plain as JUST a star

DaloLorn commented 8 years ago

Yikes, the textbox is nearly a dozen layers with no layergroup... took me a moment to figure out how to move them without tearing the whole thing apart. (And I have no idea how to edit that text correctly...)

What do you think about this one? I picked a random(ish) piece of the skybox texture as a background because it looks a lot nicer, more alive than the black-and-white background you had.

Yeah, I like that one.

And indeed, I should have layergrouped the text :) Rushing a bit towards the end, I don't really think the text is all that nice, and it's just using Sans, but it functions pretty well. It's a happy accident really.

I've made a much more coherent copy of the XCF if you'd like to see what I consider a well ordered file, but yes, I think yours looks nicer in full rez. However, it lacks the iconic logo look that the other one had. I'm not sure which would look better shrunk to a steam workshop icon.

I was attempting to also suggest a literal star that is rising up on a tapered swoosh as the logo part of the mod :)

FancyShip2.zip

As for editing the text, it's really mostly just like so: Edit the text, copy the pixels of the text and duplicate them to the shadow and glow layers, blur and move and various things them... oooor, just delete the old ones and then use the layer styles plugin to make new ones :) It's an outer glow in yellow to blend it a bit, and then on top of that a drop shadow.

DaloLorn commented 8 years ago

Heh, if it's not a bunch of precise instructions I've got a decent chance of messing it all up outright. :P

As for the 'logo look', I'm a bit less... minimalistic than you are. That's why the old logo appealed to me the way it did - not so much because of the overall content (I wasn't too fond of the 'construction stripes', as you called them), but because there was plenty of detail and stuff.

darloth commented 8 years ago

How about setting the backdrop to be a star visible in crescent with a planet blocking the bottom part of it?

A bit like this: A bit like this

DaloLorn commented 8 years ago

Maybe with better graphics quality, though. ;P

Also, I suggested this in the IRC, but I don't know if you caught it: It might not hurt to give it a bit more horizontal room. Even your own mods have wider logos than this.

darloth commented 8 years ago

Of course with better graphics quality, yeah, it's just an example (although saying that these are usually downsampled pretty heavily to fit on mod portals and things).

I agree about the horizontal spacing - these are all just quick snippets I grabbed from here and there and bodged together to try and use as examples and suggestions.
