Up until now I've been downloading ERA-Interim data directly from the ECMWF website. Instead, my first port of call for data downloads should probably be the NCAR Research Data Archive. Unlike ECMWF which involves a lot of manual clicking, you can submit a data request to RDA and they send you back a wget script to simply execute from the command line.
