Open Daniel-Mietchen opened 2 years ago
I just gave that climate one a try, for which I prepared the following text:
Hello, my name is Daniel Mietchen, and I am a biophysicist focusing on data sharing, particularly in the context of invasion biology and stem cell technology. I am based in Germany and collaborating with people around the globe.
The most meaningful things I think I have done around climate and environmental change are (i) to educate myself about the issues (ii) to integrate sustainability considerations into my professional, volunteer and private workflows (iii) to mentor others who learn about these topics (iv) contribute to public platforms that allow others to learn about sustainability issues, for instance by contributing to Wikipedia articles on these topics and building workflows to help the public engage with the scholarly literature around these matters
In terms of what I wish I had known before, three main things come to mind:
- one: as a researcher, I place a lot of value on the quality of scientific data, yet many of the politicians in charge of our societies do not hesitate to ignore scientific evidence of any quality, unless it fits their agenda
- two: the amount of subsidies that our societies - led by those science-resistant politicians - provide to fossil fuel-centric businesses is staggering
- three: in order to combat this multilayered global crisis, one of our best options is legal action against governments, companies and other actors responsible for the crisis and for delaying mitigation efforts. The legal basis for this are often human rights-related but what I find particularly interesting is the option for the International Court of Justice to consider ecocide as an additional type of international crime that would be punishable under International Criminal Law.
With that, I recorded a video that was uploaded to the platform but then became invisible to me. They asked for my contact details, though, so I expect that they will be in touch soon.
Some additional screenshots from before
and after recording my video
And here is how it looks like while in recording mode:
