add error messages to the address update procedure

Rather than silently failing to update an address, there can now be an error mesage detailing what went wrong. These error messages are printed in verbose mode only. The error messages indicate problems like:

• unknown symbols (variable is not present in the elf file)
• unknown struct member within a known struct
• array index out of bounds
• etc.
