Working with Daniel Mott, together on 20 May 2017 Daniel Mott (a 20 year user of MapInfo with NSW Police Service) worked with me to establish how to add maps to a QGIS project.

Using the YouTube training video by Klas Karlsson here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QIYZmysDNM , we were shown basic user information. He proceeded to show how to upload and install "OpenLayers Plugin".

We performed this step.. It failed with "'QPyNullVariant' object has no attrbute ' getitem'" in a dialog window a message.

Environment: Macbook Pro, Yosemite OS X. QGIS version: 2.18.2. Tutorial _01 project was open.

Upon investigation using The "'QPyNullVariant' object has no attrbute ' getitem'" in Google; I found bug reports on the 'OpenStack' and 'stackoverflow' QGIS issues sites.

Problem one

  1. I closed QGIS.
  2. I restarted QGIS.
  3. I opened a new project.
  4. I installed the OpenLayers plugin.

Problem Two

The Klas Karlsson video describes the process to load maps from a range of sources, all of which appear to be associated to Google. The link in the Web section of the video versus the view of Web in my version did not show the OpenLayers links. screen shot 2017-05-21 at 15 39 49 screen shot 2017-05-21 at 15 42 05

Further investigation using a search on "OpenLayers not working in QGIS revealed several reports in 'OpenStack' and 'stackoverflow' QGIS issues sites regarding OpenLayers no longer working following Google code changes and general instability. Several sample posts iterate this:

Problem Three

Following the establishment that the Openlayers plugin may not be useful any longer, we attempted to access the "QuickMapServices" plugin. Installed as required. On installation we received some errors which were all related to some maps not loading. Investigation showed that the QuickMapServices plugin relates to previously free services that are no longer available. Some of this is true, however there are I verified this to find that the QuickMapServices OSM (Open Street Maps) maps are okay to download.
