CPU fan spinning at full speed on MSI Z690-A boards #381

Closed miczyg1 closed 8 months ago

miczyg1 commented 1 year ago

Dasharo version v1.1.1 and earlier

Dasharo variant Dasharo compatible with MSI PRO Z690-A boards

Affected component(s) or functionality coreboot

Brief summary CPU fan is spinning at full speed.

How reproducible Always

How to reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Flash Dasharo v1.1.1 o earlier
  2. Boot Ubuntu 22.04
  3. Use https://github.com/Fred78290/nct6687d to check the CPU fan RPM

Expected behavior CPU fan RPM should be much less than 1000RPM with Noctua cooling

Actual behavior FAn RPM is constantly over 1000RPM on with Noctua cooling. On MSI firmware it sometimes shows 0 RPM, then one has to apply some load on CPU e.g. with stress-ng, then it starts showing ~500 RPM when temperature is lows and close to CPU idling.

@c67871f2 thanks, I will compare that to what I have found out so far

miczyg1 commented 1 year ago

@c67871f2 by the way, how did you figure it out?

c67871f2 commented 1 year ago

@miczyg1 First change the fan speed and then diff ec register content
