Could you please elaborate on it? If i am not wrong , your system(if developed) tells if a fact is true or false?
Avhirup,
The system specifically would use machine learning (ML) to determine the probability that what is being said or written is based on known facts. So, it's more fact versus opinion than true versus false.
A robust implementation would include training the ML on the voting records of politicians, OBM reports, as well as social media streams. This would enable detection of a politician supporting a bill or initiative with their actual votes and publicly stating an opposing view to how they voted, for example.
Statistics could be build up to establish a reputation system so people can know how frequently and severely someone bends the truth at a glance. Politicians all cast a picture in favor of their views and much of their messaging contains 'lies of omission' with some amount of outright falsehoods, more of the latter lately. ML systems can detect the degree of this sort of behavior.

Hi Jay, Is there any progress on this? A few of us are thinking of writing a proposal for this opportunity: https://www.knightfoundation.org/challenges/request-for-proposals-research-on-the-future-of-an-informed-society it is about how to keep societies (specifically America) informed. Would you be interested in helping? This idea you were developing looks to hit on one of the problems they discuss in the proposal, the difficulty people have in determining factual information from opinion. thank you, Brandy Broadbent
Brandy,
I've not invested much time on this front, but am willing to support creating a proposal. Would love to get financial backing so I could help make this happen!

Hi Jay,
Thanks! Are you one Slack? We started a channel for proposal discussion, #d4d-research. Can you join?
Hi all,
Is this project still open? I would love to lend a hand. My background is in marketing communications, and I'm currently a Master of Public Policy candidate at The University of Chicago. My knowledge of programming languages is limited but could help draft proposals and develop any other form of media that we require for this project.
Let me know how I can help.
Thank you! Paulino
@jayswartz , @brandybroadbent and @pdiazm I'm also interested in this topic. Anything still in motion or time you have that you could invest?
This would be based on machine learning, which I know about. Need help on phone apps, data sources/munging and creating a Kickstarter project.
