Local Elections data dictionary variables #3

In order to get up and running, we need to decide what variables should be collected. It seems like there could be three files - one at candidate level, one at ward level and a third at council level.

Comments or suggestions welcome - can this be streamlined to reduce duplication?

In 2017 there were elections in England, Wales and Scotland. In England there were local, directly elected mayoral elections and elections for the new combined authority mayors. There were a number of different voting systems - see https://www.yourvotematters.co.uk/how-do-i-vote/what-are-the-different-voting-systems

There is some possible duplication/redundancy with election type in both candidate and ward level?

Possible explanatory variables - unemployment, educational attainment etc - are subject to a separate issue, this one focuses just on election data.

Candidate level Country Council Council ONS Code Ward Ward ONS Code Election - local, direct_mayoral, ca_mayoral Candidate Incumbency Party Number of Votes Elected - 1 or 0

Ward level Country Council Council ONS Code Ward Ward ONS Code Election - local, direct_mayoral, ca_mayoral Number of seats Electorate Refused ballots

Council level Country Council Council ONS Code Council type - borough, met, unitary, county, combined Control - party in control following the election, including no overall control Control_prev - part in control following the previous election Voting System

Unsure about Government Office Regions as a geography, since they are England only?

Separate data files and variables for supporting/explanatory data are covered in a different issue.
