I think the PostGIS features can come in quite handy for map applications. Just yesterday I was thinking that we could for example use this to fetch points within a bounding box or for example sorted in descending distance from a given point. As most Postgres installations also have PostGIS support anyways (or it is at least easy to add), I'd argue in favour of keeping this.
