An alias should be displayed in the Roster, Group Chat and IM windows
rather than a full JID. 

Since a client can be on multiple networks, aliases should originate from
their origin network (AOL, MSN, etc), but be globally over-ridable by JID.
For example, "Tom" could be mapped to "tom234@soashable.com",
"tomtom@aim.soashable.com" and "tguy1234@yahoo.soashable.com". The alias
given to a contact on the Roster seems like a fine way to store it.
