We now have a momentary switch for the front door. The actual bell still needs testing, it's ancient and I believe runs on mains voltage without a power supply (a little dicey by modern standards).
It's a long cable run to downstairs though, It would be good to find the original cable run; I imagine the wires are still in the wall somewhere.
[sidebar] As a more techy solution, I've ordered a flic switch (https://flic.io), this can be hooked into our phones (bluetooth) or a local PC. It runs on battery power.
