What is it?

The AVTRZR (Avatarizer) is a web-based tool that lets anyone generate and customize a unique DeFiChain-branded personal avatar.

Here's a short video demo of prototype: https://youtu.be/39mN28ngGts

How will AVTRZR benefit the DeFiChain community?

Customized avatars are a great tool to market a movement, as seen in the number of Bitcoin supporters putting laser eyes on their own social profile pictures, itself a viral meme as well as drawing tremendous attention from the mainstream media. It started with crypto people and spread to celebrities, sports stars and politicians to become the de facto self-proclamation for one's support for Bitcoin. There's no denial it is a powerful tool. AVTRZR will allow the DeFiChain community to express their solidarity the same way laser eyes are doing for Bitcoiners.

Based on our own eye-tracking studies done on Twitter feed reading patterns, Twitter users scan their feed, first for the person's profile picture, then the tweet content, when browsing their feed. Twitter users depend on the profile picture while scanning a tweet to quickly and subconsciously determine if a tweet is worth paying attention to. We determined a large part of peoples' gaze on Twitter fall on profile pictures. This explains why laser eyes caught the attention of so many people so quickly.

With AVTRZR, we hope to replicate the success of laser eyes to a certain degree, in order to turn every community member into a tentacle of the DeFiChain viral jellyfish that puts the brand in front of their every follower. To measure the effect on the social media spread of DeFiChain AVTRZR has, we will observe the prevalence of the use of AVTRZR and monitor Daniel Zirkel's Twitter dashboard on https://www.defichain-analytics.com/community?entry=twitter.

Who is making it?

The AVTRZR team is an eclectic mix of core and community devs, and designers from all over the world. We are:

Aen @aentan

CFP Co-ordinator, Product Manager and Overall Creative Director

Design Honcho at Cake, based in Singapore, and one of the DeFiChain core devs who’s team is behind the design of the desktop app, light wallet and DeFiScan. He also created the DeFiChain logo.

Chimdi

Chief UX and UI Designer

Visual Designer at Cake, based in Nigeria, who does all the amazing graphics and animations that you see on the official DeFiChain Twitter and social media channels.

Wataru @wataru22

Chief Architect and Web Developer

A DeFiChain community member, digital nomad and explorer based in Canada. Kickass web developer and active member of our community.

Features

Work done so far

Hours of work have been put into the currently live product. It started out as a server-less pure front-end experiment by Aen, to UI iterations designed by Chimdi, and eventually to the working product with Wataru’s front-end development work. Such a web-based service would usually and more easily be implemented via a server side stack, especially to do image processing. We wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible within the web browser itself, and to make the service decentralized, in the spirit of DeFiChain.

Refer to "How will the funds be spent" section below for a breakdown of work done so far.

The CFP amount will partly be used to reimburse the time and effort already invested into the project, as well as for future features detailed below.

What’s next?

First public release

There is still a bit of work left to before our first public release:

Future features

We will be continuously adding new features. Some that we've planned are:

Overlay packs

Apart from the base overlays that was shipped from day one, we want to introduce special overlays packs. Think seasonal drops and limited edition capsules. An overlay pack will come with unique overlays and stickers. Depending on the season, holiday or mood, you'd always have the perfect avatar to go with it. The overlay packs created and released by us will be of high quality, designed by professional designers (Aen, Chimdi and Wataru).

How will the funds be spent

We'd like to be reimbursed for the time and effort already invested into the first public release.

Reimbursement of work already done: 12,240 DFI

Cost is estimated based on a DFI price of US$2.50

Work Man days USD cost DFI cost
Early research and proof-of-concept 4 4,800 1,920
UI design and iterations 8 9,600 3,840
Web development 12 14,400 5,760
Base overlay pack design 1.5 1,800 720

A similar amount of work will go into improving AVTRZR to add new features and more overlay packs.

Future development: 14,800 DFI

Cost is estimated based on a DFI price of US$2.50

Work Man days USD cost DFI cost
Filters R&D 6 7,200 2,880
Facial recognition R&D 6 7,200 2,880
UI design iteration for filters and stickers 8 9,600 3,840
Web development 8 9,600 3,840
2X additional overlay packs 3 3,600 1,440

We plan to create and release 2 more high-quality special overlay packs, to serve as reference and benchmark for the quality expected of future public submissions.

The 27,040 DFI will be evenly split among the 3 team members. They will not be sold. We will be staking them with the 10-year freezer to maximize returns.

Is the money well-spent?

With 27K DFI in the first year, and assuming that the community keeps AVTRZR fresh with new overlay packs every now and then, for the next 5 years, it works out to about 5.4K DFI annual cost to the community, for a potentially highly viral component in DeFiChain's marketing. Like all good masternodes-approved CFPs, a little goes a long way at this early stage. Anything that promotes DeFiChain has an impact on the market cap. I don't know how much impact laser eyes had on BTC's market cap, but even a fraction of that ought to be much more than a 5.4K DFI annual cost.

To avoid conflict of interest, as Chimdi and I are both Cake employees, we're closing this to reconsider our plans.

We will definitely continue to work on AVTRZR regardless of CFP. We will announce the public release soon.
