Yea, it would be nice. In oss4 controlling the volume this way is extremely easy:
ossmix deadbeef-stream vol-value(0 ~ 25)

After installing deadbeef, I have first checked that if it is capable for controlling mixer in hardware mode or not. It was sad to me for seeing it controlling volume in software mode. I have used it on both OSS (FreeBSD) and alsa (Linux), but same issue. Something serious audio application must do mixer in hardware mode. At least, it should offer an option for doing it.

Is this still relevant ?
it's still relevant with low-level audio plugins, such as ALSA.

Add possibility to use direct PCM instead of software volume. And probably add some new plugin or some option in preferences dialog (if hardcoded).
