Add tests

This is a continuous PR for #116 I have changed the base to fix_ci_nbdev_test_issue, making it easier to merge later.

main changes:

• Engine's base class is no longer abstract, as you suggested.
• Reordered some functions to facilitate the addition of unit tests between them.
