I'd think it wise to provide users with a first-run/setup wizard to do some
configuration, especially for new / inexperienced users.
What should happen is that a wizard pops-up asking users how they want their
notifications configured:
Over IP, Bluetooth, or both? Specific host, dhcp or global broadcast? Use
cellular network or no? Force the user to setup encryption because broadcasting
plaintext messages that might contain private information over LAN is a bad
idea to begin with and that shouldn't be the default behavior.
