For context, pulled the following from the referenced page.
Battle City (https://github.com/Deceth/Battle-City and http://battlecity.org) steals sounds from Command & Conquer. For example die.wav is actually nuyell1.aud from C&C Tiberian Dawn, which cannot be relicensed into GPL3.
@saniv - Feel free to add details. I am not 100% on whether @Deceth is actively maintaining this repository in order to address this issue.
@saniv - Thank you for bringing this to our attention and welcome to the Battle City community! Please definitely share any other details that can help us clean up offending assets, your efforts digging into this are greatly appreciated. For example is it all sounds or just that one that needs to be replaced? @rileyw - thanks for pulling the details.
The objective of this project is to be open source code anybody can learn from and build upon freely. The last thing we want is for other developers to unknowingly violate copyright when building upon our assets!
For some history... Battle City itself was first released by a company named CodeHammer back in the early 90's on Windows 3.1! It was among the first ever online multiplayer games, with everyone using 14.4kbit/s and 28.8kbit/s modems. The sounds have therefore been there for a long long time....! The original game was shutdown in 1998.
This open source project started in 2003 as a revival with permission to re-use the games original assets. Nobody working on the re-make were involved in the original project. It was assumed all assets were original works. That said, if they are not, we will need a new theme!
I do suggest you keep production history for each asset, who contributed it, and if he produced it himself from scratch or used other material in his work.
Yay! You're on the list now: https://github.com/saniv/free-game-art/blob/master/foss-copyright-infringement-records.md
