Photo and pin diagram don't match

in the pin diagram (and on the device), pins 23-15 are on the left side of the usb port, if you're holding it to be facing you (like it's being held in the photo)
in the photo, the pins look like they're on the right side (which is actually pins 3-10)

Either the diagram is mislabelled or the photo is incorrect but I don't see how both of these can be right :)

Update: after trying it out, I think the pin diagram is correct, and both photos (in Step 1 and Step 3 of "wire everything up" are wrong.
