(same for easter island statues?)

see: Fall of Civilization podcast where he explains this. (it was a super difficult thing to do, so it pushed their society into more of a meritocracy. you had to let go of your cousin working for you if he was an idiot. if you didn't, your supervisor let go of you and hired someone better. merit was rewarded. the kingdom thrived)

god, man, they KNEW the pyramids didn't "do anything". they also knew it gave them bountiful food and security and military might, THROUGH its effect on them and their society.

We make the art not for others, but for ourselves. It literally, empirically, changes us

where does this fit?

I think this is towards the beginning of the book? because it's about how, things that we thought are dumb/useless actually had an important, functional, EMPIRICAL effect.

Now the question is, what are examples of this from our time? from the last 1000 years? What are the new things people are doing that do this for our society? how can we contribute to it?
