my religion of optimism, don't think about whether this belief is true, think about what it does to believe it, it does something,

I think the point is, the optimism isn't falsified by things actually being OK in the end. The optimism does something important regardless of the outcome. and I think this is why religions have survived so long in human history (because they are actually useful, they kept us safe)
