Editra licensing issue #417

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
editra.org homepage says: "For non commercial uses Editra is freely available
under the
terms of the wxWindows License."

But the Linux tarball contains just the wxWindows License, which allows
commercial use
following terms of wxWindows License.

Such clash makes possible unintended illegal use of Editra by commercial users
that read just
a license of the downloaded file (or even Editra embedded to another package,
e. g.
wxPython) without reading the Editra home page.

To prevent unwanted illegal use of Editra, you should decide whether to keep
"non-
commercial use only" clause and then clarify Editra licensing:

Either

1. Re-license Editra to "wxWindows License" without "non-commercial use only"
clause and
remove "For non commercial uses" from the Editra home page.

or

2. Add the "non-commercial use only" clause to all downoadable files and notify
all Editra
embedders about this limitation (e. g. wxPython).

Warning: If you choose 2., expect removal of Editra from many Linux
distributions as a
consequence.

This clause 'non-commercial use' is not listed anywhere anymore and I honestly
at this point don't remember when it was there or removed. May have been back
around the time this ticket was created.

Anyway nothing to worry about. Any one can Use Editra in a commercial or
non-commercial setting to work on any files they want for any purpose. There
are no nor have there ever been any restrictions on the end user use of the
application.

Again sorry for not updating the ticket till now.
