KsatHorFrac from International Hydrogeological Map of Europe #25

Open hboisgon opened 3 years ago

hboisgon commented 3 years ago

Suggestion: KSatHorFrac is currently set as an intbl with uniform value of 100 (right?) For the Rhine, Ruben applied a uniform value of 250. For the Meuse sbm model I also started using the 250 value and noticed that baseflow was underestimated in the catchments mainly underlain by limestone. For Europe, the international hydrogeological map of Europe provides an aquifer map (as shapefile) with 8 categories (data download from: https://www.bgr.bund.de/EN/Themen/Wasser/Projekte/laufend/Beratung/Ihme1500/ihme1500_projektbeschr_en.html)

inland water snow / ice Practically non aquiferous rocks Locally aquiferous rocks Low and moderately productive porous aquifers Highly productive porous aquifers Low and moderately productive fissured aquifers (including aquifers rocks) Highly productive fissured aquifers (including aquifers rocks)

Results are improved if I use a value of 1000 for Highly productive fissured aquifers (including aquifers rocks) and set the rest on 250. This could probably be refined further, but it is already making a lot of difference (at least for the Meuse). I guess this could be a nice addition to derive distributed value for KsatHorFrac for Europe. I am not yet 'ingewerkt' in de code, so probably someone else can implement this easily or assist me on how to get started ;) Mark I have now assigned this to you because you are also doing the landuse stuff which is probably a similar set up, but I am happy to help! I think this issue fits in '03-complete wflow sbm setup', but this can also be changed.

Comment from Willem: Yes, interesting development. I think a KSatHorFrac of 1000 is quite high, and it is possible that compensation for quite low M values takes place. The issue with wflow_sbm right now in my opinion is that we only include the first 2 m of the soil/ phreatic aquifer. One of the more process/content developments of wflow should be an extension of the soil profile based on these kind of datasets and probably including the option to simulate lateral groundwater flow based on head differences.

@verseve is still relevant? It was opened in the (very) old Gitlab repository of hydromt. If yes could you set a priority?

You mentioned maybe that @aweerts is working on a new KstaHorFrac map?
