I think a dodge would be good, should add to the gameplay. Not sure about block. If we do block I think it should work more like smash's block bubble. It is like a dodge but it has a "life bar" of sorts that will punish you if you overuse it or use it at the wrong time. The problem with a block that puts the hitter off balance is that it would be inherently too strong, especially if there was no timing involved in blocking correctly. It makes defense much better than offense, which promotes a game where neither player wants to attack. It should just protect you long enough to counter attack during their recovery.
Doing the dodge would be good though, and I think we could manage to get it in before our first turn in, just need to set a timer where the player is "dodging" and either has his hitboxes removed or just ignore's the hit because dodging = true. Also needs a cooldown period of sorts, so you can't spam it (though this shouldn't be overly long either).
Should we try and have this before we turn in our first version of the game (without animations though since what we have may already be a lot of work to color and draw)? How did you imagine neutral guard to be and neutral dodge? I'm imagining neutral guard to leave the hitter off balance and the guarding player to have enough time to counter. And the neutral dodge to be something like down + L or R trigger in smash
