Dropdowns and search text should appear more responsively and less buggily

It's hard to predict when exactly text will get highlighted, and when the reference will reappear.

• [x] After hitting delete, text gets selected, but removing focus from the search bar doesn't replace the text with dropdowns
• [x] The page should not get blanked before a search
