Solution to stop bottom gear from falling off? #12

I already posted this on Discqus, but probably it’s better to have it here …

I have one problem with the gears. Because I had to disassemble the unit a lot of times to make the gears and teeth go smoothly, the bottom gear is falling off after a short time. For a future version it would be nice to have something to prevent that. Btw. I used 3mm MDF and 3mm acrylic glass, will try to make new gears with less than 3mm.

Answer from Greg:

The gear falling off can be a bit of a problem as at the moment we rely on friction to hold it . Currently the best way to fix this is either to try re-cutting the gear with a smaller spline until it fits snugly or to glue it on with something like superglue. But in future versions it would be good to fix this correctly. Cutting the gear from 2mm acrylic is also a good idea, sometimes this works well with a 3mm acrylic but if the MDF is slightly thinner than the acrylic it will catch.
