Yeah, I wouldn't say the way it works now is even helpful really except for comparing pistols. Could ask the speedrunners about it, but I think they have the damage stats memorized already anyway.
Myself, I have an intuitive idea about how strong weapons are but I don't know most of the numbers. The comparison with the mean is what's helpful to me.
When I started running I found it confusing. For a while I assumed it was damage comparison to vanilla. Now that I know how it works, I don't get confused, but I have never found the comparison useful and it adds some measure of noise to the UI for me. It's probably related to how I developed the habit of preferring to take a weapon into my inventory and checking it that way -- I rarely read the highlight. It tends to happen later in the game when I know my inventory is likely to be full.
If the comparison was entirely removed or if the comparison was purely done against vanilla values, the highlight would be more personally useful to me.
when looking at a weapon right now it compares the damage vs the weapon you're holding
maybe we should additionally add the default, or even remove the comparison to your current weapon (doesn't make much sense to compare pistol and gep gun)
