[OBO MykoMap] Evaluate options for displaying lots of text within a MM #224

Open ColmDC opened 7 months ago

Please track against the clockify project [OBO MykoMap]

Description

Consider the following use cases which require more real estate to be made available for text than the current MM panel design provides.

Use Cases:

and propose options for new functionality to support these cases.

Acceptance Criteria

@ms0ur1s can we chat about this soon?

A little context for OBO requirements for more text real estate. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qc5-tIHb8-CnCY4DqabyCcja-9w_1M6HkhCn9ijJxU4/edit?usp=sharing

Hi @ColmDC and @ms0ur1s

This issue is confusing. Neither of the specified use cases are best served by the description to 'make more space for text available'. And the GDoc doesn't provide more context.

When you both chatted did you come to any conclusions? Or should we do a Feature Candidate exercise to explore how we might best meet these use cases?

Thanks :)

wu-lee commented 4 months ago

I could be wrong, feel free to correct me if so, but I think this is referring to the problem Owned by Oxford had, where:

See this issue for a link to the original documents we had to work from in this case, and an attempt to summarise that: https://github.com/DigitalCommons/owned-by-oxford-project/issues/26

An alternative might be to have a pop-up "welcome" dialogue which opens when the map is first opens. Perhaps a bit like this (Leaflet based but non-Mykomap) map https://homemakeroxford.org/map/

A work-around in this case might be to put the guide in the embedded site.

More generally, the "about" panel seems fairly limited in the amount of text it could usefully show.

ColmDC commented 4 months ago

currently it can't be opened by default

Being addressed by https://github.com/DigitalCommons/mykomap/issues/231 which is not in In Review.

ColmDC commented 4 months ago

Do we think this is clear enough @ms0ur1s and @lin-d-hop ?

Essentially we need some design options for how we could provide application usage instructions. The issue of making use of an extra tab in the side panel being too small is probably not so much of an issue given the need to also support on a mobile.

lin-d-hop commented 4 months ago

Not yet @ColmDC I'l try unpick with Marcel

@ms0ur1s @lin-d-hop

How can we unblock this one?

lin-d-hop commented 3 months ago

Hi @ColmDC Marcel and I just just chatting. There is a lot of information scattered across a lot of places for this, so I'm wondering if the following will work:

  1. An extra panel in the side panel that can include free text and a 'read more' button.
  2. On click of the button a modal pops up that can have as much information as is wanted.
  3. All the text is specified in configs.

Given the requirements seem to be whittled down to 'more text real estate', does this meet the requirements? If so Marcel can create some designs.

Yes. I believe it does.

@ColmDC and @lin-d-hop designs are linked below. I also added an extra icon for instructions and used the info symbol for the about us.

Thanks @ms0ur1s .

Would the read me button be greyed out when the modal popup was displayed?

Did you consider any other positions? Docked on the right for example. I'm not recommending that, just wondering if you did consider that and prefered the centre.

On Mobile:

Would touching the Read more button induce a scroll down to the extra text or would it be more like the tab switchces?

ColmDC commented 3 months ago

This may be orthogonal to the design, but noting here anyway.

On run up of the app, OBO folk wanted the detailed instructions to be visible, so https://github.com/DigitalCommons/mykomap/issues/231 needs to also cover having this pop dialog's presence configurable.

ms0ur1s commented 3 months ago

Thanks @ms0ur1s .

That makes sense, if not greyed then at least lighter perhaps. I'll update the designs accordingly.

Tbh, I didn't consider any position other than centred, because it seemed the logical position. I think it would be strange to have the side panel docked to one side and the information pane docked to the other.

Probably five or six I @ColmDC.

Let's go with 5 then.
