The <rs> element is allowed in the schema, but not discussed in the guidelines. My understanding is that one needs it for indexing references to a person or place that are not a proper noun. For example:
et aliquandiu postmodum in <rs type="place" ref="https://wikidata.org/wiki/Q5887169">eodem uico</rs> commoratus.
I might suggest requiring@type on <rs>, with the possible values geog, person, place, or org, if this would be useful for indexing, but perhaps it is unnecessary as long as the information can be derived from @ref or @xml:id.
