Hello Shenzhen

Questions to help describe the residency needs and outcomes:

Title of residency:

Connecting Art School and the Tech Industries through Digital Making

What is the main question, issue, challenge, or area of interest the residency will address?

Camberwell, Chelsea & Wimbledon (CCW) Colleges of Arts are located in a world leading tech capital. Yet from the outside looking in how relevant is the digital sector to our offer? Arts disciplines & practices are not immune from digital transformation and the UKs digital economy is not just transforming businesses and tech jobs in London it is also having huge impact on traditional non-digital practice across the country.

This proposal aims to explore how the Hello Shenzhen residency could contribute to workshops & debate around the ‘Digital Economy’ and support CCW in questioning the challenges of digital transformation in the arts sector.

Please give a brief outline about the expected content and format of the residency.

We would be looking for individual/s to be resident in our digital projects space at Chelsea college of arts, they would have daily contact with staff & students.

We would like to co-develop activities, workshops and debates with the resident maker to run with UAL staff & students to explore specific themes of creativity, digital making, innovation, enterprise and the digital economy.

The Residency would also include one or more public event/sessions at Tate Modern, part of the Digital Maker Collective projects at the Tate in Feb & March 2017.

All learning content & resources produced would be made available online and creative commons licenses.

Why do you want to host a residency and how does the residency brief fit with the other activities of the organisation?

We currently have a Digital Maker network of over 200 staff & students and a small team of active members who undertake regular activities & meet-ups. Digital making is an area we are exploring together across disciplines and would welcome international & profession perspectives on this.

Have you had any previous experience hosting a residency or something similar? If so, please provide a bit more detail.

The university generally has a lot of experience of hosting international residencies and research exchanges. The Digital maker Collective currently host an alumni digital artist in residence which has proved a very successful way to bring alumni & professional perspectives to students.

Please explain the outcomes and outputs that you wish to have produced/achieved through the residency

Ideally we’d like some areas of debate around specific aspects of the art school & the digital economy to have developed and to have some useful case studies or documentation of students addressing these issues, and starting to take ideas forward in some way.

Please list at least three things that your organisation does really well. We will use this information to find the best match so these should be areas in which you would be willing to share your expertise and best practice with the resident.

The Digital Maker Collective values:

Support and share unique perspectives of digital making & emergent practice in the arts (openness) Foster a co-produced, participatory approach to exploring digital arts learning and social engagement (trust & generosity)

New perspectives & research on the impacts of digital on the the art school, sector & industries e.g. explore enquiry led interdisciplinary art school curriculum (Risk)

Please characterise the ideal resident including skills, expertise and interests.

The ideal resident would be someone with an interest in creativity and the arts (but this is not essential). Ideally we are looking to establish & explore collaborations with individuals and industries which are not typically linked with the creative industries, from science to medicine. Advanced skills and knowledge of new technologies and the tech industries. Good communicator.

How many residents would you like to host?

We could host 2 residence but could also included other residencies to join/contribute to our projects, workshops at the Tate.

Please list whom from your organisation will be involved in the exchange and their role(s). Please be sure to appoint at least one day-to-day contact.

The main UAL contact & lead for the residencies would be Chris Follows: CCW Digital Learning Technologies Manager for the University of the Arts London, Camberwell, Chelsea & Wimbledon (CCW) colleges of art CCW Digital

The Digital Maker Collective is made up of over 200 individuals who have shown an interest in the Digital Maker Collective, many attending or participating in activities, workshops & events offered by the Collective. Read more about individuals actively engaged in the collective here - http://process.arts.ac.uk/category/tags/digital-maker-collective-profiles

How many hours over a 5 day working week can this person be prepared to spend with the resident(s)?

We would hope the resident would establish regular times throughout the week to be present in the Digital projects Space, although this would be up to the resident. The resident would have access to the space 6 days per week.

Please list any materials, tools, budget, resources, etc. that the resident will have access to.

The Digital Project space is a newly evolving space so we have limited tech at this stage, which include Computers, 1 X 3d printer, 1x HTC Vive, 1x VR PC, pc screens, various arduino vs raspberry pi & related kits, 360 video cam, small object scanner).

We would look to agree access for the resident to all the College resources & workshops.

We would also introduce the resident to take advantage of the wider London ‘Maker Community’. We see collaboration with the emergent arts sector, tech industries & MakerSpaces as playing an important role in our development. There are over 40 MakerSpaces in London offering lots of facilities, expertise & support E.g FabLab London run a free induction on Friday mornings, open to anyone. Here’s the details we would share Download a copy

Would you need financial support in order to run the proposed residency? If so, how much?

£2000 - 3000

We would love this residency to inspire some follow on activity in Shenzhen or the UK. There will be grants available for this should you wish to come up with ideas for future collaboration. Is this something that you and/or members of your community might be interested in?

Yes this is something the Collective would like to consider as well as for future projects e.g. Year 2 of our work with the Tate Exchange will explore how more international collaboration and the theme for year two will be ‘production’.
