System: Derivative process to swap .tif with .jpg

Archives dept will discuss creation of derivatives and whether the preservation tool that Archives will implement in the near future is better equipped to do the job vs. Hyrax. At this time, Hyrax does not seem to be the best solution (as long as we upload an access jpg and provide a thumbnail, this should be sufficient for our users).

Archives will also discuss whether a retroactive process will be necessary for images currently in Hyrax (delete TIFFs if JPGs are already available? ingest JPG derivatives?)

ASC has decided to utilize the Preservica preservation management system to create jpg derivatives from ingested tifs. Once the derivatives have been created, they will be exported and ingested in Hyrax. Cottage Labs will swap the Hyrax tifs out with the new jpgs.

ETA for bringing Preservica on board is late October.

ASC is currently working with Preservica service reps on the metadata schema. Once this has been decided, we will move forward with planning the WPI Historical Images collection upload to Preservica - which will create the JPG derivatives.

Preservica is now using the MODS metadata schema. The metadata templates provided by Preservica for the Starter version can not be customized and do not accept multi-value fields. Due to these reasons, MODS was selected - the schema is more robust and supports more elements related to digital preservation.

Ingest has begun for the Historical Images/University Photograph Collection (UA01). Approximately 2600+ images ingested so far. Additionally, Arthur has provided a sample set of images for Anusha to test the swap process in the test environment.

Anusha/CL will need to perform this swap due to indexing issues with replacing the .TIFs

Anusha is testing this. There is an issue with Hyrax and previous .jpgs (ghost files?) that she needs to resolve before the swap can be done in the test environment.
