It seems that pkgdown is having issues setting paths to images in docs/articles. The images from the vignettes directory are copied to docs/articles but in the vignette html file images are being sourced from the vignette directory. As a temporary workaround I have manually changed the path to all images in the docs/articles html files to only include the terminal folder and filename (e.g. Visualisations/Visualisation-1.png). Now the images are rendering properly :)
