Planets are more distinct by featuring the following traits:

ownership: player with most units/buildings 'owns' planet
productivity: scales unit production
defense bonus: units of the owner of the planet have advantage/disadvantage against other units when fighting on that planet
gravity well: the cost of moving units to and from the planet varies
size: number of building slots (how many buildings can be build on a planet)

A generator that creates sensible (read: fair) planets for each system.

Planets should also offer those helpers:

Calculate distance between two planets
Calculate point of closest approach (especially when it will happen)
