Thanks, I'll add the workaround note to the website.
Can you link the upstream issue?

I'm new to this, so I'm assuming you're asking for me to link the issue fix request I made with Mozilla. If so I posted it to Mozilla Connect and it still hasn't been approved to show up on the forum.
CORRECTION: My encounter of this error message when adding a custom search engine: Error connecting to "[UserInputtedSearchEngineName]" Is not due to characters in the URL (although that may cause it another case) It actually is caused by running PDANet (a 3rd party tethering android app). It seems that when adding a custom search engine Firefox Android tries to connect to it, if it fails the custom search engine isn't added.
I still think this behavior is detrimental and if a workaround is possible it would be superior as the custom search engine feature as is, is too sensitive and will throw an error due to: mistyped characters in the URL, VPNs, and being offline.
The desktop versions of Chrome and Firefox aren't this fussy, whatever custom search engine is inputted is used whether it connects to a website or not.
--I understand this is an issue better levied at the Firefox devs, and I already reported it to them. Just in case you guys have interest in patching this I included it here.
