Note that the documentation for the Xplained evaluation boards has no information regarding high voltage tolerance of the programming pin. As shipped, all programming pins (UPDI or DBG) are NOT 12V tolerant.
Please review the datasheet section Disconnecting mEDBG and the schematic for your Xplained board.
More information regarding HV tolerance needs to be be added to the HV programmer documentation.
