LAN Cabling in Laser Workshop inaccessible #1498

Open MatthewCroughan opened 4 years ago

MatthewCroughan commented 4 years ago

The PC Systems are on the wrong side of the room to allow network access via LAN Cables which causes #1497 and #1336

If we wanted to plug these systems into the LAN via ethernet, it would have to go across the room, causing a trip hazard and more. Ideally it could go over the entrance door to the workshop and gain access to that side of the room in that manner.

In #1497 I bought WiFi adapters, though they may not be very good. The reception in this workshop is already weak as it is, I doubt there will be great connectivity even if these adapters do work reasonably well, so this is a should does.

Other solutions, input and explanation/context is welcome. I anticipate that #955 may cause the room to reorganise, so maybe we can solve this by simply swapping the side of the room that the PC systems are on, requiring no modifications?

Is it possible to put cabling under the floorboards, as in other areas? On 20 Sep 2020 10:42, MatthewCroughan notifications@github.com wrote: The PC Systems are on the wrong side of the room to allow network access via LAN Cables which causes #1497 and #1336 If we wanted to plug these systems into the LAN via ethernet, it would have to go across the room, causing a trip hazard and more. @JackiePease I think that'd be a good solution, but it would be permanent if we did that, so we have to be sure that the room would never change direction from right sided to left sided, for it to be worth it. We can have a rubber cable cover in the center of the room as we previously had, that may also be good.

I think going above the door would be really simple though. All we need is a single ethernet cable to go over it, it would practically blend in. Far less work than digging up the floorboards.

Going under the floorboards is something I have been thinking about, but it depends where the screwed down floorboards are. Another complication is that the existing LAN sockets are routed within the wall and are possibly not long enough to reach to the outside wall (It’s over 2 years ago that we installed these).

One possibility is to install a socket to socket extension, under the floor, then patch across to the existing wall mounted sockets.

I suspect we may have to wait a little while though, as I expect the local lockdowns in Liverpool and Knowsley are going to take precedence over LAN cabling in the coming weeks.

MatthewCroughan commented 4 years ago

@magman2112 A socket to socket extension would expand everything, so that's great. More sockets for anything we want to do, on both sides of the room. Do we need to buy anything? I can order stuff if needed.

magman2112 commented 4 years ago

I don’t know at the moment, but I suspect we have sufficient parts in the LAN closet.

I have a roll of cat5 and a bag of connectors, I'd propose a cable around the room (and a 4 port switch under the window if needed).

Alternatively, OpenWRT to turn an old wifi router into a repeater.

MatthewCroughan commented 4 years ago

@Sean-anotherone That's a good idea if we have any old wifi routers available, but a real Ubiquiti access point like we have in the main room already is only £20. We may not be able to get a stable openwrt router for less than that. There would also likely be additional complications regarding the networking configuration if we tried to use openwrt to repeat the wifi, rather than trying to mesh it by adding to the Ubiquiti AP we already have in the main room. Maybe @johnmckerrell could comment?

When I go to the laser cutting room I also have the same problem the internet never really works, it may work occasionally.

johnmckerrell commented 4 years ago

Just thinking, that AP is pretty cheap. Given that people use their own laptops in there it's probably worth fitting a new AP, so long as we're sure it will be fully compatible with our current system. We had talked about putting a small socket sized one in Dinky, could we do similar in the laser room?

MatthewCroughan commented 4 years ago

@johnmckerrell I can buy that exact AP for the laser room, you can buy a second one for dinky. This way, we can get it done sooner rather than later. I will buy it now if you think this is a good idea.

johnmckerrell commented 4 years ago

It looks different to the ones we have, tbh it looks fake to me, I want to have a look later before committing.

@johnmckerrell The one I have at home was bought from this eBay seller. They're just the old 2.4ghz only model, which us why they're cheap.

I ran a cable around the laser room and moved the small 4-port switch over to near the window, the socket wasn't patched but @magman2112 found the patch catalog and sorted it out - laser room PC now has cabled connection.
