Plan the decoration of the new space #650

Open johnmckerrell opened 6 years ago

johnmckerrell commented 6 years ago

We will have a number of walls (although not all that many) on which we might be able to put artworks, posters, information screens. What ideas do we have for these?

Hopefully @zarino can post an updated plan highlighting the walls that are in theory available and colour code them by "plain" or "brick". Then we can come up with some ideas and even vote them up. There's always the option of painting on the ceiling too!

johnmckerrell commented 6 years ago

I had thought we should have some funky wallpaper on one wall, reminiscent of the wallpaper we have on the way into the current workshop. WeWork coworking offices have this in their London meeting rooms and it can be a good talking point.

I had already been thinking this and then I saw some artwork by a friend - Andrea Taylor - she's been taking shapes she has found in Liverpool landmarks and used them to make repeating patterns. She even did some of her initial work coworking in DoES. She's interested in us doing this but I don't know what the costs would be, both to her and also simply getting custom wallpaper printed.

There's no good link for her artwork currently but these should give an idea:

If the custom printed wallpaper idea didn't work out I still think it could be good to have some funky wallpaper.

JackiePease commented 6 years ago

Sites like Spoonflower and SurfacePatternPrint do custom wallpaper, if she could provide the design in the format they use - the costs are easy to find on the websites.

Note: I'd quite like to learn how to do repeating patterns if she's interested in teaching!

I like big maps (and I cannot lie), e.g. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/decoration/frames-pictures/björksta-picture-planet-earth-art-80329121/

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

I LOVE the idea of big maps.

We could have pins stuck in all the places our members have been, to show how globetrotting DoES is.

Would be very cool if we could get a massive version of a map of Liverpool or something, maybe an old one for added interest.

It'd need rebuilding, but we did draw a huge map of Toxteth with Tosca, and so could do something similar with a different map...

I'm intending to find some space for one or two big posters (A2 or A1 probably, but limited on the shorter side by the width of the vinyl cutter as an upper limit I expect) to do some more of the quotes like the ones in the corridor at the moment.

I like the idea that @jackie1050 has been pursuing of some large-scale embroidery-on-wire-mesh. That might also work on one of the brick walls, as it'd only need a couple of fixing points.

What about some interactive/data-driven geometric LED panels? Simon and I could install some of the shapes from PlayTheTree including a couple of the touch panels or, alternatively, hooked up to suitable data feeds to react to that.

Finally, David Andrews is keen to do some art on one of the walls.

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

I've mentioned to a couple of people about the Internet section in the Media Museum in Bradford, and how the lights in the displays change colour depending on the mood on Twitter - so, for example, if a celebrity dies and there's an outpouring of grief, they go darker than if a puppy just frolicked through a meadow.

It would be quite cool to do something similar, or at least have an Acker's Bell/Echo Liverbird type thing to let us know when we're being talked about.

I have started looking at the embroidery on a mesh idea (I think there's been a long time interest in this at DoES).

If anyone has any mesh fencing to try this out on (either that they could bring in, or in situ), please get in touch.

JackiePease commented 6 years ago

@DoESsean Have you got a good link for the Bradford stuff? Loads of beautiful pictures on their site, but I'm not sure I can see what you're talking about (lighting designer's site is here michaelgrubbstudio.com, but not much Bradford related there)

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

I can't find anything online about it, but I swear it exists!

I'm just that cool.

zarino commented 6 years ago

Here’s the current plan for the walls that should be going in shortly:

screen shot 2018-02-22 at 11 26 48

Anything blue is a new stud wall that we’ll be building, and right now they’ll all just be plain white, with a basic white architrave around doors and skirting along the floor.

The two small workshops on the right will have windows in their walls, next to the doors.

Light blue rectangles are indicative sizes and locations of desks, worktops, or immovable objects. All very finger-in-the-air right now, and the observant amongst you might notice no laster cutters or heavy equipment are included, because that’s a whole other bridge to cross.

zarino commented 6 years ago

I should add, the landlord seems happy with us displaying "things" that represent DoES out on the walls of the stairwell on our floor – as long as they’re good quality and tasteful, and whoever moves into the floor above is happy with them too. They’d need to be fairly slimline so as not to obstruct movement, and they’d need to look almost "art gallery" smart, rather than just an assemblage of stuff nailed to a wall.

I immediately wondered whether @jackie1050’s "embroidery on mesh" idea (https://github.com/DoESLiverpool/somebody-should/issues/650#issuecomment-361936414) could go out there. It would be a really impressive feature as you walk up the stairs, and it has a nice "tapestry" / "fabric" theme to match the ethos of the building.

johnmckerrell commented 6 years ago

We never quite got around to sorting out the bookshelf of “things” in the old place so we should do that, or maybe a display cabinet but ideally with functional things (WhereDial, Bubblino, word clock, etc etc)

magman2112 commented 6 years ago

I had a bit of a "On the wall" idea today and thought it might be interesting to have a modern slant on something like a picture rail as a common fixture around the walls.

Either make something a bit nice and tactile (say stained beech with a dovetail to take T-Slot nuts), or painted wood or go industrial and use aluminium extrusions like Vector T-Slot). Fixings to the wall could be hidden (recessed screws with holes plugged) or used as a feature for the design (Large Hex screws, Brass plugs, etc.).

This would then allow fixing of light use shelves, posters, artwork, things, etc., without having to drill lots of holes in the walls. Items could be suspended from chains, metal strips, nylon line, etc. depending on the aesthetic required.

Making the wooden rails wouldn't be too much work, as jigs could be made to make the work repeatable and I own some good quality powerful routers. I recently made a plate rail for my kitchen using similar idea's and tools.

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

I quite like that, definitely something to think about once we're in there.

magman2112 commented 6 years ago

I wouldn’t have thought so, as adding power brings in a whole load of safety regulations, unless it was DC or low voltage AC perhaps.

I was thinking of a metal strip fixed (glued) in the dovetail slot though, so screws in the T-slots would not dig into the wood. A thin strip of aluminium would work and would possibly add to the aesthetic.

johnmckerrell commented 6 years ago

There's a particularly ugly bit in the meeting room where a door has been blocked up by breeze blocks. I was wondering what we could do for that and had the idea to build a Tardis door that would go against the wall and just cover it up. @zarino mentioned though that a similar thing has been done in a Bristol space where the "Tardis" actually contains a whole meeting room. An alternative might be a wardrobe door that leads to Narnia. Or a Monsters Inc. door. Or maybe a door is too confusing and we should think of something else.

(I like the idea of something quite kid friendly too in the hope that people might be able to use the room for kid-friendly coworking)

Pezmc commented 6 years ago

A tardis/wardrobe/monsters inc door sound fun, as long as it's clearly a prop and not a usable door! Wouldn't want any fire safety concerns!

zarino commented 6 years ago

I love the idea of a Tardis door, as long as it’s realistic-looking ;-) Obviously doesn’t need to open, but having it the correct size (bigger than you think) and with realistic relief (rather than just a flat painted surface) it could look really good.

I wonder whether we could set it as a "project" for interested folks (myself included!) to help out with on Maker Days / Nights, once we’ve moved into the new space?

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjpGIWP4zic

There was an epsiode of Doctor Who where River got trapped in the TARDIS and only found a brick wall after opening the doors. We could do something similar.

amcewen commented 6 years ago

It doesn't feel like we'll get any of this sorted before the move. At least once all the furniture is laid out we'll have a better idea of where we can add more decoration. Might be worth spinning this out into separate issues to cover what's going to get done then too.

amcewen commented 6 years ago

So, Simon and I are installing some of Play the Tree at MakeFest. After that I'd like to install some of it on the safe wall in the events space and have it set up and running.

If there aren't any objections we'll work out how to mount it up there, and I'll work out an API for talking to it - then we can have it react to events in the space or online...

JackiePease commented 6 years ago

Are there enough baubles to do both, so it could be there for the brunch?

DoESsean commented 6 years ago

Being as we're now in the space, and we have all these lovely, empty white walls, does anyone have any drive to follow up on any of the ideas floated here and start making the space look fun, warm and inviting? Or at least start us down that road?

johnmckerrell commented 6 years ago

Idea No 231. Paint the event room white wall to look like a theatre stage with elaborate curtains, etc.

amcewen commented 5 years ago

Simon, @magman2112 and I have installed a bunch of Play The Tree onto the gable wall of the events room this afternoon/evening (as seen in https://www.instagram.com/p/BrWDioKFlON/). Some of the baubles need some TLC to get working again, which I'll look at over the coming weeks, and the software is just running a test rainbow at present. I'll rework that sometime soon too. I need to find a way to make it react to other stimulus (probably via MQTT) as part of the remaining work for What does health look like, so that'll give us a start on other people being able to connect it to things.

I'd also like to build a dimmer/off switch for it, but in the meantime, if anyone wants to turn it on or off, it's just a single plug to the right of the safe, feel free to turn it on or off there.

DoESsean commented 5 years ago

I'm re-raising this, as there are some excellent ideas that might be worth revisiting, especially as the walls come up semi-regularly.

Whilst clearing out the Crap Zone where the sublimation printer now lives, @magman2112 and I came across a load of picture frames that might be quite nice to use to feature events we go to, people doing things in the space, etc.

If not, I can get rid of them from under my desk!
