What's the use of this?

It's possible that it's just dead code. Whenever I run --version in 4.4.902, it doesn't exit.

I don't see how that's possible. I have obviously had an effect by changing the function already. Besides, 4.4.902 is no longer relevant to current bugs/behavior :P
