the servant will serve him for the rest of his life

The word is "forever." That this is figurative should be explained in a note. Analogous problem in Ecc 5:15.

The ULB of EXO 21:6 now reads: \v 6 then his master must bring him to God. The master must bring him to a door or doorpost, and his master must bore his ear through with an awl. Then the servant will serve him forever.

The figure "forever" would require a note. The ref to ECC 5:15 was a puzzle.

The for life, or forever is dealt-with in the NIV: EXO 21:6 - then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life. The ULB of EXO 21:6 now reads with change: \v 6 then his master must bring him to God. The master must bring him to a door or doorpost, and his master must bore his ear through with an awl. Then the servant will serve him for life.

LEV 25:46 - You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. ULB NOW reads: \v 46 You may provide such slaves as an inheritance for your children after you, to hold as property, and make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your brothers among the people of Israel with harshness.

DEU 15:17 - then take an awl and push it through his ear lobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your maidservant. ULB DEU 15:17 now reads: \v 17 then you must take an awl and thrust it through his ear to a door, and he will be your servant for life. You must do the same with your female servant.

This is "all the days" NOT "forever" but is changed from "permanently" to all your days. 1SA 28:2 - David said, “Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.” Achish replied, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard all your days.”

JOB 41:4 - Will he make an agreement with you for you to take him as your slave for life? NO change to the ULB

The ULB of ECC 5:15 now reads:

\v 15 As a man comes from his mother's womb, \q2 so also he will leave naked. \q1 He can take none of the fruits of his labor in his hand.
