Aspect ratios and cropping of uploaded photos are a mess #27

It used to be possible to upload images in any reasonable aspect ratio, and they would still be shown correctly in the Thing or Make gallery. Now the images are stretched or cut off if they are not uploaded in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Thumbnails in the gallery now seem to be stretched to fit their width, and if they are taller than expected, the top and bottom is cut off. In the past the image would be shrunk to always fit within the 4:3 box, which was way better. Also, thumbnails in the new Things or Makes overview page are deformed.

Workaround: always upload images in a 4:3 ratio. Either crop or add letterboxing if the source image does not have that AR. The gallery images are scaled to 628×472 pixels. I upload images at double that size: 1256×944, to allow viewing the higher-resolution image as ‘original’ in the (otherwise useless #10) full screen view.
