At the time you posted this, I was writing a blog post expressing similar thoughts, it is now available…
I am starting to suspect that the sorry state of the Thingiverse website is intentional, to chase away visitors and slowly kill the site without making this too obvious. It's the only sensible explanation for a website behaving so poorly for such a long time.
I used to speak of Microsoft in the same breath as Darth Vader. Now I'm wondering if they might not be the salvation of Thingiverse. Anyone know a big wig with MSFT that might see how buying Thingiverse could further their agenda of supporting open source?
3d printers did not take the world by storm, but they are slowly working their way into the consciousness of the consumer market through makers that share their works and explain the process to friends at work, holiday parties, and weekly game nights. Thingiverse is an essential tool for scrappy makers to new acolytes to the the 3d printing space.
Now is the time for Thingiverse to double down on being the marketplace for 3d printed objects and ideas. $200 printers that just 'work' are now common place and Stratsys would be foolish to throw away a giant swell of evangelists for the cost of some compute power and a support staff.
