(i) create a default axis label "n" for the counts in the upper and right histograms

(ii) consider alternative representations for the contours. Some observations:

the 2d grid size seems very large
the 2d grid does not always align well with the variables being plotted
the color scheme of the contours is dark at high density, but this also masks the points
