You can turn shield render off, but you will see it again upon taking damage

I'm making a PvP server and I don't want players to get an advantage due to transparency, and in general it looks ugly. Can I count on fixing this bug?

There is no easy fix for this issue. Minecrafts rendering engine is very problematic when it comes to transparent rendering. To fix this I am going to have to completely rewrite my shield renderer and replace it with something simpler.

Can I do a mod check? If there is a Mekanism mod, then the shield animation will be disabled and it can be enabled in the config?
