Backport the fixes for #111 and #117 to v0.2.x as v0.3 may take a while. #118

Some changes may take longer than expected, so the fixes for #111 and #117 should be backported to v0.2.x, probably as a v0.2.0.3 update.

The fix for the really slow package list loading has also been backported because testing the other changes was too painful. Kinda forgot it was so slow, actually. Any performance improvements that don't involve not manually updating the statusbar constantly won't be in v0.2.0.3 because those were more involved.
