Merge master into windows_compatibility #180

windows_compatibility is a few commits behind master and needs to be brought up to date.

I'm expecting no issues merging this branch considering it is only a few lines of code, and considering windows_compatibility deals with mainly documentation. Therefore I am merging the request.
