Open chat, scroll up, press ESC to close the chat. No more messages will come up in the chat now, because it is scrolled up. You have to open the chat again, to have it automatically scroll to the bottom.
The problem with this is that if you open chat, scroll up to read some history, you have to scroll down again or else it will be stuck scrolled up, and you will not receive any new messages (visually anyway).
