Add more release-build diagnostics #3464

Xref #3330

This issue covers adding more syslog and other diagnostics to help analyze release build problems in the field. I'm thinking of a new class of messages SYSLOG_VERBOSE that can be disabled separately and starting with things like attach "progress messages" to help see what's happening when attaching to large applications.
