One of the weak points of the mod (and Minecraft itself) is how the start is always the same, not giving many gameplay options to players: Get wood, mine a bit, get apricorns and farm for materials to craft pokeballs.
It would be nice to give players some effective alternatives to this system:
Add some "rough pokeballs", balls with a 0.5x catch rate, but that can be crafted with just 1 apricorn and 1 wooden button, so to give something to immediately start with;
Add random "Kurt's house" structure, a pokemon-style house that has a pokeball crafting station already built in it;
Feed berries to wild pokemon, if a pokemon is under level 30 and not too stronger than the player's team, feed it enough berries to see it start following you and, after a while, have a chance to join your team voluntarily. The berry quality could affect this final chance;
Vending machine lottery, each time you buy from a vending machine you have the chance to win some pokeballs or, more rarely, a pokedoll;
Chatting npcs rewards, they are often ignored by players, but it would be nice if sometimes they said "I found this in a pond, do you want it?", "Thanks for hearing me, this is for you", etc... and give you some pokeballs, potions or items.
These are just my ideas, so there are for sure much better methods to give gameplay alternatives, but hopefully they will be of some use.
