This is actually requested in the data access agreement for H3Africa.
You agree to acknowledge in any work based in whole or part on the Data, the published paper from which the Data derives, the version of the Data, and the role of the H3Africa consortium and the relevant primary collectors and their funders.
National guidelines for some countries require that this should be the case. For example, countries such as Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya and Zambia require that a local PI be associated with any research on country samples or data taking place outside the country while in Tanzania, the user must acknowledge the source of the data. This use is unlikely to be stated in consent forms.
Discuss with the group: is this part of the consent or part of the access agreement?
@solideoglori will bring it up at next call on Wednesday. It may be helpful to call it out, but would probably be appended to every dataset so is it really useful ?
I've run into other cases where attribution is required but where the data is unrestricted otherwise. I'd agree that "attribution required" is another limitation we should add. But I do wonder if categorizing the data as "no restriction" is appropriate even if the data isn't restricted to "general research use". I guess that's another topic.
New term: acknowledgement required.
