List of ethnicity terms not found in HANCESTRO #29

Open zhengj2007 opened 1 year ago

I am working on VEuPathDB ontology development for supporting the VEuPathDB database. We need some terms for ethnicity annotations. Since they are not found in the HANCESTRO, I am wondering if you are interested in the terms. If so, we'd like to submit the terms and provide the information you need.

Here is the list of terms: Bobo Djan Bwaba Dioula Mossi Peulh Samos Dafins Dagaris Lobire Birifor

Hi @zhengj2007, we welcome all new term requests as we are keen to make HANCESTRO as broadly useful to all communities engaged in biocuration as possible. For each new term, please provide at a minimum a suggested parent class and a reference to a published definition of the population - a genetic reference population is preferable but we also accept publications discussing the population in other terms. A suggested definition and any synonyms are also welcome. For African populations, we are working closely with the African Population Ontology, which is currently under development as part of H3A and we will defer to their expertise in case of discrepancies.

@daniwelter Thanks! We will work on it and send the NTRs when we are ready.

@daniwelter We found the information about the terms we need using google search. It seems the ethnic group mainly based on where people are living. Do you prefer me to submit the term one per issue or post all of them in this one? Thanks!

daniwelter commented 1 year ago

@zhengj2007 all terms in one issue is fine. Feel free to put all the information in a Google sheet and link it here, if that's easier than typing in it all in.

@daniwelter Thanks!

Here the information I found for the terms we need.

Bobo: a Mande ethnic group living primarily in Burkina Faso, with some living north in Mali.

Djan: seems a surname, https://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=djan

Bwaba: not found, but found Bwa people, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bwa_peoplean, refers African society that is native to Burkina Faso.

Dioula: (also spelled Dyula, Diula, or Jula) a Mande ethnic group inhabiting several West African countries, including Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.

Peulh: Fula people, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fula_people, an ethnic group in Sahel and West Africa.

Samos: people from Samos? Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, south of Chios, north of Patmos and the Dodecanese, and off the coast of western Turkey.

Dafins: (may be same as Marka), a group of people who speak Marka language, people are a Mande people of northwest Mali. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marka_people, https://joshuaproject.net/people_groups/13550/ML

Dagaris: The Dagaaba people, singular Dagao, and, in northern dialects, Dagara for both plural and singular, are an ethnic group located north of the convergence of Ghana, Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire.

Lobire: Limba people? the third largest ethnic group in Sierra Leone. Or it is a group people whose last name is Lobire?

Birifor: Birifor people, an ethnic group of about 200,000 in West Africa, primarily located in northern Ghana, southern Burkina Faso, and northern Côte d'Ivoire.

I didn't get any extra information from the data provider. But if you need more information, I can ask our outreach team to try. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

@zhengj2007 unfortunately none of the links you provide constitute sufficient evidence under our criteria for defining population groups; we need links to peer-reviewed publications or alternatively, we can accept links to reference populations submitted to genomic databases pending publication. Most of the terms you require are covered in the African Population Ontology, so we will be able to cross-reference them once they release a public version. "Djan" and "Samos" are not recorded in AfPO so we can't reuse them here. I have also found no evidence of population groups on Samos that are sufficiently homogenous to constitute a separate group outside the more general population of the Greek islands and the wider geographic area.

@daniwelter Thanks a lot for working on it. It's great that most of the terms are covered in the African Population Ontology, and you can make them available in HANCESTRO. Can I know how long it will be ready for us to use?

I will ask our team to see if I can get more information about "Djan" and "Samos".
