Technically it should properly be ported to the engine and count network
connections. At the time it was originally implemented the game was not
counting spectators but now that it does the engine likely has all the
information it needs.
There are some additional problems counting them in code/game because there was
some problems during intermission. I don't remember the exact nature of these
problems but I believe some bots could me marked as connecting.

This has been in the engine for sometime including 0.8.8.
